Thomas Traherne

Thomas Traherne (c. 1636–1674) was an important member of the British clergy, poet, and theologian. Born in Hereford, Traherne attended Brasenose College, Oxford, where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He then entered holy orders and served as a clergyman in the Anglican Church. Traherne is primarily known for his eloquent and introspective poetry, which explored themes of beauty, nature, and inner life. His writings were often deeply spiritual, reflecting his Christian faith and a profound sense of wonder in the world. Although largely unpublished during his lifetime, Traherne’s manuscripts were rediscovered in the late 19th century, eventually establishing him as a notable figure in English literature.
